Music is one of those things that captures you in a way you never saw coming. Somehow even a non-music lover can hear a tune and be swept away on a journey back to a better day, a happier moment or even a feeling they don’t know how to express. Sure, some music awakens sadness but a majority of music awakens happiness, love, fun, joy, and any other emotion you can think of. For me, Christmas music is one of the genres that can take me to a high or a low in just a few notes.
Maybe for me, Christmas music is a soundtrack to most of my great childhood memories. Christmas was when I had my family together the most, it was when my mom was the happiest and less likely to take out her sadness on me. It was when the extended family showed up the most. Even more recently Christmas was just the best time of year, family together, kids making noise, food smelling amazing, laughing at old stories of years past, and making new memories of the current years.
The years I was married were filled with family gatherings, but out of all the get-togethers, it was Christmas I loved the most. We all just had our own agendas but when we ended up at the same place with the same mission it was magic. Kids making noise, kitchen sounds, a little debating over whether to order mimosas or not the call for a drink or one or two, dogs playing, sisters-in-law’s gossiping, brothers debating, it was ours, and even divorce can’t take away those wonderful memories.
Now I have a much quieter Christmas. Even since I have been here our holidays have changed. Covid did that for a lot of us. The fear of making each other sick was just too great and home we stayed. I haven’t seen my sweet one-day mother-in-law for almost two years. Her home is so inviting and she is lovely and fun. We have stayed in for Christmas for the last two years. The boys have been with us and dinner was made, debates on whether or not the movie Die Hard is in fact a Christmas movie. Living with 3 males I was a bit outnumbered in my opinion that it, in fact, was not a Christmas movie. It doesn’t really matter, it’s a great movie, right? So of course, we ended up watching it and maybe changed my mind. One of my greatest joys is Belle opening her presents and playing so hard for the first few hours of Christmas morning by evening she had very little begging energy when we sat down to eat.
I don’t know what as a family our Christmas song would be but I do know I love the sounds of Christmas even when it is the late-night practice of sax and trombone.
